As you face a new day and week, if you are a Christ-follower, where is your confidence? Do you have confidence today that you will keep God happy? Will you live so uprightly that God will be satisfied with you? Are you confident in your ability to live good enough in order to stay saved?

This may surprise some of you, but I hope not.

What is the object of your confidence?

Peter helps us think carefully through the issue of our confidence in daily living as a Christian. Consider his words:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5, italics mine)

Christ should be the object of your confidence and hope. God provided for our spiritual new birth through Jesus Christ (cf. Eph 2:1-10). God accepts you because He accepted Christ. Our new birth provides a living hope through Christ’s resurrection, an inheritance, and salvation.

Who keeps you saved?

Peter reminds us that it is the power of God that keeps you saved. Your inheritance as a born-again child of God is incorruptible, unblemished, and does not fade away. Furthermore, your inheritance is reserved for you. God keeps and God reserves.

What role do you play then?

As you begin your week, you can do three things. First, rest in the power of God that keeps you saved. You can do nothing today as a genuine believer that makes you any less saved. Second, be grateful for this reality. Third, in appreciation, live for Jesus in everything you do.
