Christmas is always a time for joy and celebration. A time for awe and reflection on the love of a most compassionate God. Twinkle lights. Stockings. Anticipation.

We don’t often think of Christmas as being bittersweet and challenging, but for many it is an emotional journey. Many memories of the tenderest hopes and hard bitter losses wrap themselves together and get mixed in with all the other packages under the tree. Christmas represents for many another stage in their process of grief. If you know someone who has experienced a deep loss, send a card, a note, give a big hug or an extra special gift. It really doesn’t matter if it was this year or ten years ago….a kind word can be so needed this time of year.

For those who have loved and lost a dear family member or precious friend, I am praying for you this Christmas.

For those Mommies and Daddies whose hearts break a bit more each year as you long for and remember your babies in heaven, I am praying for you.

What hope do I find this year, even as I deal with my own heartaches? This year, as I ponder our little ornaments, I am reminded of Psalm 23.

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

We are not alone. Thank you Jesus that you came so we wouldn’t be alone in our pain. I pray you feel His comforting presence this Christmas.
