Anticipation. The act of looking forward. Anticipation, at times, peaks the day before a special event like Christmas, a wedding, a delivery date, a final, a speech, a birthday, a date, a phone call, an interview, a vacation, a big game, and on and on.
Over my lifetime, one of the those most anticipated days is New Year’s Day. The excitement and sobriety of beginning a new year is incredible. Just this week, I’ve talked with an engaged couple, expectant parents, seniors in high school, and one waiting for a contract to begin. Of course, not all are positive like those mentioned. Some anticipate those negative things ahead.
For the Christian though, there is one thing to anticipate above all others.
The Return of Jesus Christ
Ever since Jesus Christ ascended into Heaven, anticipation continues to build for His return. The angels set the stage with this pronouncement:
10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:10-11)
Since that day, forty days after His Resurrection, Christians have been waiting for His return.
When Will He Return?
Short answer: no one knows except God the Father (Mark 13:32). Many have speculated when it will happen, but in all reality, no one knows. What we do know is this: there is nothing left unfulfilled in the Bible that would prohibit Jesus coming at any time. His return is imminent.
Your Anticipation Should Produce Results
What kind of work? Strive to grow in your relationship with Him. Share the Gospel message with others. Live every day to the glory of God. Steward the opportunities before you. Anticipate His return.
“What kind of work? Strive to grow in your relationship with Him. Share the Gospel message with others. Live every day to the glory of God. Steward the opportunities before you. Anticipate His return.”…Yes! This is what was discussed with the ladies at church this morning. Anticipating when He will return and how we should use our time wisely until we go to Him or He returns. I often consider what I’ll be doing when Jesus returns…I hope He will find me obedient and ready. God Bless Dr. Carson!
