Insignificant? (1-Minute Mondays)

Have you ever considered something insignificant only to find out later that you were absolutely wrong? What you had thought as insignificant was actually quite significant. It is easy to happen. On a low level, underestimating a particular person, role, or event happens all the time when watching a movie, show, or play. On a high level, sometimes we experience things in life that seem insignificant in the moment but turn out to be life-changing.

This is exactly what happened thousands of years ago to a servant. Here’s the story…

The Servant’s Rejection

The prophet Isaiah describes what happens as part of a prophecy. He writes,

1 Who would have believed what we just heard?
When was the Lord’s power revealed through him?
He sprouted up like a twig before God,
like a root out of parched soil;
he had no stately form or majesty that might catch our attention,
no special appearance that we should want to follow him.
He was despised and rejected by people,
one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness;
people hid their faces from him;
he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.
(Isaiah 53:1-3, NET)

Isaiah refers to the greatest suffering Servant ever, Jesus Christ. He describes people’s perception of Him while He was on earth. There are many things to note, but let me draw your attention to the end of verses 2 and 3. He was not beautiful; in fact, He was not desirable upon which to look or follow. He was rejected by the people.

Catch these words and let them rattle around in your soul for a few moments: “People hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.” Allow that to settle for a moment.

Considering Jesus Insignificant

The people Jesus came to save considered Him insignificant.

I wonder how many of us, too, go about life considering the most Significant person in human history insignificant?

…especially those of us who say we follow Him!

What significance will Jesus play in your life today?
