Over the centuries, music has blessed the souls of countless Christians. The Bible records songs of various sorts throughout its pages and throughout Bible history. Some of the Psalms still bless countless Christians in modern worship.
God designed us and music to connect. This is true of all mankind, not just Christians. A quick scan of the radio dial or follow a friend’s Spotify list and you will recognize that music of every genre and lyric touches the hearts of people. However, when you connect what you know about God, Christ, the Spirit, the Word of God, the Church, and the Christian experience all together in song, the result is dynamic.
You will enjoy the 8:17 video below that celebrates Christian worship music throughout the centuries.
The Importance of Music in the Christian Walk
Not only is music good for mankind in general which we know by experience, connecting music with life is commanded in the Scriptures. Consider Paul’s admonition to every Christian:
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Col 3:16)
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, (Eph 5:19)
Further, look at this assortment of verses from the Psalms:
1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. (Ps 95:1)23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And my soul, which You have redeemed. (Ps 71:23)1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord;
Praise Him, O you servants of the Lord! (Ps 135:1)
The first pastor of the Church of Jerusalem instructed us to sing praises to God when we are happy.
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. (James 5:13)
And there will be plenty of music in Heaven (again, this is just a sampling of verses).
3 And one cried to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isa 6:3)3 They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. (Rev 14:3)
3 They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
“Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the [a]saints! (Rev 15:3)
Enjoy This Celebration of Christian Worship Music Throughout the Church Age
Maybe you will be like me as you hear this ensemble of songs…I have sung each one of them many times over the years. There is not a song he uses in this celebration that I have not enjoyed myself. I’ll let you listen…
May God be glorified in our singing and life today!
