Attentive listening, keen observation, genuine conversation, and authentic concern all characterize Christians who strive to honor Christ and love others. These same skills help you become a good friend to those around you. In total, these four characteristic traits should describe the one who follows Christ.
Be Sensitive to Those around You
Discussing how a Christian’s life changes after he or she knows the Lord, Paul describes authentic or sincere love. One of the characteristics of that love is sensitivity to those around you. He writes:
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. (Romans 12:15)
Rejoice and weep – and arguably every emotion in between – with those around you. Here Paul uses the two extremes to describe those that are close by you. Be happy with those who are happy. With those who mourn, mourn. In other words, be sensitive to the moods, feelings, emotions, and desires of those around you.
Humility Makes this Easier
Humility is a key for the one committed to being sensitive to others. As you move in and out of proximity with people throughout your day, humility quiets your soul and opens your eyes. You can take the time to see, experience, and peruse the people around you. Humility means that you desire to serve as one who has been transformed by the mercies of God.
Rather than indifference, you are touched by the experiences of others.
