You’ve probably heard it said before, seen it written, or sung these words, “This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” But do you know why these words are particularly helpful? Do you know what they mean and how they apply to your day and week?

This is the day the Lord has made…

As mentioned above, I have read this, seen it online, sung it, and written it. In fact, it is one of those verses in the Bible that just stick with you. Check out its context:

21 I will praise You,
For You have answered me,
And have become my salvation.

22 The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This was the Lord’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever. (Psalm 118:21-24, 29)

What is so special about this day? Two things: First, the foundation of this day is Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone (Eph 2:20). Jesus’ resurrection inaugurated a new day and a new covenant. Second, God is covenant faithful, or in other words, God’s mercy endures forever. Whereas Jesus inaugurates a new covenant; God is covenant faithful to and in that covenant.

How does this affect your day?

Regardless of what is going on in your day and in your world, this is true. Jesus is seated in heaven on the right of the throne of God “far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come” (Eph 1:20; Col 3:1). The resurrection and ascension of Jesus inaugurated a new day with a new covenant. And in this day, God is covenant faithful.

No matter what is going on in your day today…

Regardless of how out of control it may feel…

Despite wherever you are…

Jesus lives, is seated, is far above every other name that is named, and God is faithful to keep it that way. This is the day the Lord has made, we can rejoice and be glad in that!
