As we get a new day and week started, possibly your day and week will be busy. Some days once I leave the house, I am busy every moment until late in the day. That’s not uncommon probably for most of us as we go about life.
If I am not careful though, I allow the many things that I can do today or want to do today or need to do today to distract me from what in my heart I truly desire to sincerely prioritize. I want to be a faithful follower of Jesus. Having a particularly busy day does not keep me from doing that for sure; however, being mindless about being a faithful follower in the midst of a day does make it extremely difficulty.
Faithful Followers of Christ
As Jesus taught his disciples, He explained to them the full weight of being a follower Notice how He describes it:
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels. (Luke 9:23-26)
In this conversation, Jesus tells His disciples what following Him ultimately means. For the one who chooses to follow Christ, it means a whole-hearted, full-throated surrender to do what honors the Lord. Literally as Jesus prayed to the Father, “Not my will but your will be done.”
The Challenge for Our Day and Week
Jesus wants us willing to be all-in for following Him which requires obedience and may include enduring suffering as well.
Most of us are willing. We strive as Jesus did while on earth to deny self and take up our cross and follow. We recognize even in the midst of our daily lives that compared to everything and anything in the world, nothing in the world is of comparable value than following Jesus Christ.
Our challenge today and this week is to be mindful of our commitment. To follow faithfully. To value what is truly important.
