What Do You Treasure?
Treasure. There are many things in life that capture our attention. Shiny things. Important things. Fun things. Yes, things is broad on purpose. Almost anything can become our treasure. What do you treasure?
Take a moment to consider what Solomon said about treasure.
Treasure on Two Fronts…
Solomon writes:
1 My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
4 If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5)
The first front is God’s commands.
In that sense, Solomon tells us to treasure God’s commands within us. We enjoy God’s commands in us once we have received them. The best way to receive them is through reading, meditating, and memorizing God’s Word. As you receive them, you treasure them. You see their value, ascribe personal value to them, and embrace what they teach.
Once you treasure them, the Word motivates your action. Look how Solomon describes it. You incline your ear – lean into the Word – in order to grow in wisdom. The wisdom you receive from the Word provides you the ability to use the Word of God to determine what the best options are thought daily living. As you apply that wisdom to those many different situations, you grow in understanding. Incline your ear – apply your heart.
The second front relates to good application.
Seek for consistent, good, God-honoring application – wisdom-driven understanding. Value that kind of application as silver, search for her as for hidden treasures. You prize and seek to honor the Lord as you would prizing and seeking hidden treasure.
Just as you would spend time getting to the field or river, searching for the right location, panning for the treasure, and working through sorting out what you get, take the time to internalize God’s Word as treasure while searching for understanding as you would hidden treasure.
