Eternity

Eternity. Have you thought about it recently?

Eternal life with Jesus Christ. Total perfection.

Although Jesus is with us now; we will physically see Him then. Although we know He loves us now, we will live in perfect harmony with and complete worship of Him then. Where we struggle loving Him now, we will enjoy perfect love then.

But remember, Jesus did not teach eternal life alone. Instead, He added to it. For those of us who follow Jesus, He taught that we all get to be there together with Him. All of us. No sin. No suffering.

Can you imagine it? Think how incredible this is going to be!

Somedays, the thought of heaven is exactly what you need.

Maybe you feel a bit lonely. Think of heaven.

Maybe you feel a bit overwhelmed. Think of heaven.

Maybe you feel a bit sad. Think of heaven.

Maybe you feel a bit confused. Think of heaven.

Maybe you feel a bit bitter. Think of heaven.

See, whatever it is that you think, feel, or have experienced in a broken world filled with suffering, sickness, sin, and all the ravages of a fallen world pushes our eyes upward to heaven for a glimpse of the hope of eternity. Think of heaven.

As image bearers of God, we know what perfect is. We long for it. We yearn for a future day when the wrongs have been righted, the relationships restored, the slavery to sin broken, and the suffering alleviated.

In the midst of the fog of depravity, we long for that future day.

And, thankfully, it is what God promises us in order to encourage each of us. Notice what Jesus says:

“Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:1-6)

The Apostle Paul explained:

For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared to the glory that will be revealed to us. For the creation eagerly awaits for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God who subjected it – in hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. For we know the whole creation groans and suffers together until now. (Romans 8:18-22)

Today, take a moment to remind yourself of the truth of Scripture. Heaven awaits. Eternity begins soon. I’m ready.

As the old song says, “This could be the dawning of that day!”
