Saved! Saved!
In this series I have shared many of the songs I grew up singing. They are fun to review and sing along with as I write. This one is no exception. Saved! Saved! testifies to the salvation we have in Jesus, and the joy we have in Him. We sang it as a congregation back home, plus I had a Cathedrals tape with Kirk Talley singing it acapella. The only version of that song I could find on YouTube is below.
Because this one is tricky to lead, this song was the final for my song leading class in Bible college. Since I had grown up leading songs, although tricky to lead, I passed. :)
Below you will find the lyrics, read a bit about the theology of the hymn, the story of the author, and be able to hear several renditions of this old, beautiful hymn. Sing along, if you like, and testify to the joy of being Saved! Saved!
Saved! Saved! Lyrics
1 I’ve found a friend who is all to me,
His love is ever true;
I love to tell how He lifted me,
And what His grace can do for you.
Refrain:
Saved by His pow’r, by His pow’r divine,
Saved to new life, to new life sublime!
Life now is sweet and my joy is complete,
For I’m saved, saved, saved.
2 He saves me from ev’ry sin and harm,
Secures my soul each day;
I’m leaning strong on His mighty arm–
I know He’ll guide me all the way. [Refrain]
3 When poor and needy and all alone,
In love He said to me,
“Come unto Me and I’ll lead you home
To live with Me eternally.” [Refrain]
The Theology
This song testifies to the power of salvation in the life of a follower of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes that with salvation also comes friendship with Jesus, awareness of the love of Jesus, an experience of grace, assurance of salvation, confidence in eternal security (security of the believer), help from Jesus for daily living, and the presence of Jesus through life unto eternity. What a great set of themes for a testimony to God’s grace as demonstrated through salvation in Jesus Christ.
The refrain points us to means of all this grace – salvation. Saved by God’s power in Jesus Christ! Saved to new life in Jesus Christ! This kind of salvation brings joy.
Consider these beautiful verses as you contemplate the meaning of the song:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. (John 15:13)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)
