New Christmas Chevrolet Commercial Reminds Us of What’s Important
Outside of a reference to life in and around the church or a relationship with Christ, the new Christmas Chevrolet commercial reminds us of what’s important. Let me encourage you to watch it below first, then I’ll respond to it.
I’ll let you clear your eyes before I continue writing.
“A Holiday to Remember”
Chevrolet takes us on a journey with a family struggling through Alzheimer’s with their grandma. This commercial travels from a child who does not know how to respond to an unresponsive grandma to a granddaughter who creatively takes her grandma to view old houses and places of significant memories of a lifetime in a small town. All in the front seat of a classic Chevrolet Suburban.
It goes deep into my heart as I watch this commercial. Why? I just prayed for a family who are in the end stages of Alzheimer’s with a husband, dad, and grandfather. In a very close-to-me situation, I know of a family who just took a similar drive with an older person. I used to take these types of drives with a dear saint regularly. I have a dear friend who is facing these impending waters with an early diagnosis of dementia. Another dear friend of mine described a family member I know who is facing memory issues like his mom did.
If you are like me, you watch this and cry. This commercial captures the realities of life. We suffer. Adam’s sin in Genesis 3 put us all under the system of death, sorrow, and a broken world. It is in this world that Jesus came to provide us hope. Jesus came to offer us eternal life if we believe in Him. Essentially, I watch this commercial and remember the necessity of a personal relationship with Jesus which brings hope to each one of us.
Jesus. Family. Life’s ups and downs. Limited time.

In a world of commercials that hit every politically correct button, this one stands out. It stands out because in some ways it takes us back to a less cynical, less hatred-filled, less bitter world. This is a commercial that sends us all down the long path of our memories. We know the person, the places, and the smile that was there but is now gone.
As we go into our memories, we think of those who we love who simply are not here anymore as well.
For those of us who are alive and on this side of a terrible disease ourselves or with our family members, we should allow this commercial this season to stand as a quick reminder to love well, love slow, and pray often for those around us. It may be a person in your church, a person in your family, or someone in your neighborhood who you know is older or struggling. Whoever that person is, reach out. Take a moment of creativity (like in this commercial) to reminisce, connect, and simply share life.
I finish the commercial and think of people, places, the significance of relationships, and the shortness of life. I remember that it is in these realities that my faith should live, should act, should speak. We live today as we prepare for eternity. And, just think, in eternity there will be no more death, no more sickness, no more goodbyes, and no more Chevys.
For today, I’ll take my Chevy Silverado for a spin as I make time to build relationships as well.

Thanks for showing the commercial and your follow up comments. This commercial is nothing but brilliant and should be mandatory training for every staff member who works with those living with dementia. My mother passed away with Alzheimer’s Disease and we did not have a clue how to connect with her.
Recently, I too have walked with families as they engage with loved ones living with dementia. It is a very hard road!
