Behold He Comes!
Great news! Jesus will come again some day. All of us who follow the Lord have the wonderful hope of looking forward to His return. Behold He Comes!
When will Jesus come? We do not know. It could be anytime during the day or night. We just know that He is indeed coming.
Some future day we will experience this reality. What a joy it will be as we will no longer have trials, troubles, or any other focus than our dear Savior.
This song reminds me of the words spoken by the angels as Jesus ascended into heaven:
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)
I think of friends who may be in grief, in the midst of suffering, or under intense pressure. I know the message of the return of Christ is important to them. Others are sitting by the bedside of those who are headed to heaven soon, today. Even others may simply be saddened by the extent of sin in the world. In each and every one of these situations, we anticipate the return of Jesus.
We rejoice in this news!
We do not know when Jesus will return, but we look forward to it with rejoicing. Yesterday, while visiting with another brother in Christ, he reminded me of this song and its origin. The Tennessee Temple University was part of the Highland Park Baptist Church. Dr. J.R. Faulkner was the associate pastor there under Lee Roberson. This particular song was one of his favorites.
While leading a choir myself in the 1990s, I would also lead this song as an opening number for church services. It is simple and reminds us of three simple facts:
- Jesus is coming. Jesus promised it. “And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too” (John 14:3).
- When He comes, it will not be a secret. He will come in the clouds and everyone will see Him (cf. Acts 1:9-11).
- The ultimate question, will you be ready for His return? Are we ready for eternity? Are we waiting in anticipation? “So be patient, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s return” (James 5:7).
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 3:11-13).
