Proof the Bible Is Correct
While in the museum at Delphi, we found beautiful evidence that serves as additional proof the Bible is correct. This museum glorifies everything Delphi – which primarily is a shrine to Greek mythology and belief in the Oracle of Apollo. Here, people would come to learn about their future through the work of the Oracle of Delphi, a priestess chanting from a trance caused by leaking gases below the temple. People came from far and wide to experience her “magic.”
Yet, in this same museum, there exists a beautiful letter that works against Greek mythology and following Apollo. Instead, it points us toward belief in the true God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Let me explain.
As you can see from the picture above, they discovered a letter from Emperor Claudius to the proconsul of Achaia that dates back to 52 AD. Why is this important? Great question!
In this letter, Emperor Claudius demonstrates his interest in the city of Delphi. They were short on citizens; therefore, he gives advice on how they can attract new citizens from other locations to move to Delphi. But, that’s just the context.
What makes it important is the fact that the letter references Lucius Junius Gallio, the brother of Seneca, who was the proconsul of Achaia at the time of the Apostle Paul’s stay in Corinth.
When Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him to the judgment seat, saying, “This fellow persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.”
And when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or wicked crimes, O Jews, there would be reason why I should bear with you. But if it is a question of words and names and your own law, look to it yourselves; for I do not want to be a judge of such matters.” And he drove them from the judgment seat. Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. But Gallio took no notice of these things. (Acts 18:12-17)
This letter is physical and objective truth that Luke’s story is historically accurate. The date on the inscription dates the time Paul was in Corinth (somewhere between July 1, 51 to July 1, 52), and confirms the accuracy of the historical record related to who was who and where. Before they had found this proof, skeptics of the Bible had questioned both the timing of Paul’s stay in Corinth and questioned if the person Gallio ever existed.
Excellent! Now, go and enjoy your day with new evidence of the authenticity of the Word.
