Encourage Yourself When You’re Feeling Down

Three Ways to Encourage Yourself When You’re Feeling Down

We have all been there.  Life has its ups and downs. Each of us go through times when we feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or just plain down. Feeling down could be encouraged physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, or a combination of any of those. While it is important to individually lean on the Lord and seek help from others, there are also steps you can take to encourage yourself in those tough moments. Here are three practical, biblical ways to lift your heart when life feels heavy.

1. Preach Truth to Yourself

When we are feeling down, our emotions often cloud the truth. We might believe lies about ourselves, our circumstances, or even God. That is why it is so important to preach truth to yourself, just as the psalmist did in Psalm 42:5: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation.” Take time to remind yourself of God’s promises. Open His Word and meditate on passages that speak to His faithfulness, love, and care. Write down truths like these:

  • God is always with me (Josh 1:9).
  • His grace is sufficient for me (2 Cor 12:9).
  • His love for me is steadfast and unchanging (Lam 3:22-23).

By anchoring your thoughts in Scripture, you can combat discouragement with the hope and truth found in God’s Word.

2. Focus on Gratitude

When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to dwell on what is wrong or what you perceive as wrong. But shifting your focus to what you are thankful for can transform your perspective. Paul reminds us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess 5:18). Take a moment to list three things you are thankful for — big or small. Maybe it is the beauty of God’s creation, the love of a friend, or the simple blessing of a warm meal. Gratitude does not minimize your struggles, but it helps you see God’s goodness even in the midst of them. As you cultivate a thankful heart, you will find that it becomes easier to notice and appreciate God’s blessings throughout your day. Here is an associated article to help you make a gratitude list.

3. Reach Out for Encouragement

While self-encouragement is important, God designed us to live in community with other brothers and sisters in Christ. Again, the Apostle Paul teaches, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal 6:2). Do not hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, pastor, deacon, or mentor when you are feeling down. Share your struggles and let them encourage you with prayer, Scripture, and words of kindness. Sometimes, simply being reminded that you are not alone can make a world of difference. In addition, do not forget that God often uses you to encourage others too, “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered” (Prov 11:25).

A Closing Word of Hope

If you’re feeling down today, remember this: God sees you, He cares for you, and He is near to the brokenhearted (Ps 34:18). While life’s challenges may weigh you down, you can find hope and encouragement in the Lord. Take these steps today to remind yourself of His goodness, His faithfulness, and His love. You are not alone, and there is always hope in Christ.
