The Power of Music to Encourage the Soul
Are you like me and absolutely love music? Music holds a unique place in the human experience, stirring the heart, uplifting the spirit, and drawing us closer to God. As a pastor and biblical counselor, I have witnessed the profound impact that God-honoring music can have on those who are weary, discouraged, or burdened. The Bible itself clearly emphasizes the power of music. Remember in the Old Testament when Saul was so burdened? Samuel wrote, “And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him” (1 Sam 16:23). Why was it so helpful? Because music has the power to encourage the soul! Music, when rooted in truth and offered in worship, becomes a divine instrument to encourage the soul and point us to the hope found in Christ.
A Vehicle for Praise, Lament, and Reflection
Throughout Scripture, music serves as a vehicle for praise, lament, and reflection. The Psalms, often called the hymnbook of the Bible, demonstrate this beautifully. Psalm 40:3 declares, “He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.” Here, music not only expresses personal devotion but also becomes a testimony to others, encouraging them to trust in God also. Whether in times of joy or sorrow, music helps us process our thoughts and emotions, which then helps align our hearts with God’s truth. It reminds us of His faithfulness, His sovereignty, and His love, even when life feels overwhelming.
Consider the story of the Apostle Paul and Silas in Acts 16: “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25). In the darkness of a prison cell, their songs of praise not only sustained their spirits but also bore witness to those around them. Music has this remarkable ability to transcend circumstances, offering hope and pointing others to the God who is worthy of our trust. When we sing or listen to songs that proclaim biblical truth, we are reminded of Who God is and what He has done, which strengthens our faith and encourages our hearts.
Here’s What We Can Do
As followers of Jesus Christ, we must be intentional about the music we allow into our lives. Not all music edifies. Some songs, driven by worldly values, can stir discontent or despair. Yet, music grounded in the truth of God’s Word can renew our minds and refresh our souls. For this reason, I encourage you to take two practical steps.
First, assemble a list of specific songs that uplift and encourage you. These might include hymns like “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” or contemporary songs like “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman, which focus on God’s character and promises. Begin to listen to these songs regularly, allowing their truths to wash over you. Create a playlist that you can turn to in moments of need, whether in your car, at home, or during a quiet walk. Let the melodies and lyrics anchor your heart in God’s unchanging love.
Second, share these songs with others who may need encouragement. In a world filled with anxiety and uncertainty, a single song can be a lifeline. Send a link to a friend who is struggling, play a song for a family member, or include music in your small group or church activity. When you share music that exalts Christ, you offer a gift that can lift another’s spirit and point them to the hope of the gospel. As Psalm 96 exhorts, “Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day” (Ps 96:1-2). Your sharing may be the very means God uses to draw someone closer to Himself.

To my fellow counselors and pastors, I urge you to incorporate music into your ministry. As you walk alongside those who are hurting, consider recommending specific songs that align with the truths you are sharing. A song can reinforce biblical counsel, providing a tangible reminder of God’s presence long after a session ends. Encourage those you counsel to build their own playlists of edifying music, and model this practice in your own life. Music is not a substitute for God’s Word or prayer, but it is a powerful tool that complements them, helping those we serve to fix their eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2).
In a world that often feels heavy, let us embrace the gift of music to encourage our souls and those around us. May we sing, listen, and share songs that proclaim the hope of Christ, trusting that God will use them to refresh, renew, and restore.
