Overcoming the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO):
Three Summer Priorities for a Meaningful Life
The fear of missing out, often unspoken, grips many hearts in our fast-paced world. People rush from one event to another, driven by the dread of not experiencing something significant, memorable, or socially celebrated. This unofficial “FOMO” whispers that we must chase every opportunity, attend every gathering, or seize every moment to feel fulfilled. Yet, this pursuit often leaves us exhausted, distracted, and spiritually empty. As followers of Christ, we must pause and ask: What truly matters? What opportunities align with God’s purposes for our lives? Today, we consider overcoming the fear of missing out. Whereas, the world clamors for our attention, Scripture calls us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matt 6:33).
Summers amplify this tension, especially for families. The season bursts with activities – sporting events, camps, vacations, and opportunities for children to excel in academics, arts, or athletics. Parents shuttle their kids from one practice to another, hoping to cultivate achievement, secure future success, or guarantee that future scholarship. While these pursuits have value, they can crowd out what matters most. Amid the flurry of our summer schedules, we must anchor our hearts in eternal priorities. This summer, let us focus on three opportunities we cannot afford to miss: growing in the Lord, serving others, and spending time with family and friends, as these especially align our lives with God’s purpose for our lives and bring lasting joy. In other words, we do not have to operate out of FOMO; instead, we can enjoy many opportunities with the perfect motivation for it.
First, prioritize growing in the Lord.
Summer offers a unique rhythm to deepen your relationship with God through His Word and prayer. The psalmist reminds us: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119:105). The world’s noise and a busy schedule may tempt you to skip your quiet time, but nothing is more vital than knowing and loving Christ more deeply. Attend church faithfully, where the preaching of God’s Word strengthens your soul. Join a life group to grow in relationship and fellowship with others, fostering accountability and growth. Set aside time each day to meditate on God’s truth, allowing it to shape your thoughts and actions. Growing in the Lord equips you to face life’s challenges with wisdom and grace.
Second, commit to serving others.
Jesus taught, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Summer provides countless opportunities to reflect Christ’s heart by serving those around you. Volunteer at your church, whether by helping with a camp (like I observed this week at Sonrise) or something similar like Vacation Bible School, assisting in community outreach, or supporting a ministry need. Look for ways to serve outside the church as well – perhaps helping a neighbor with yard work, volunteering at a local shelter, or helping a local nonprofit. Serving others shifts our focus from self-centered pursuits to God’s call to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:31). In serving, we find purpose and joy that no fleeting summer activity can match.
Third, cherish time with family and friends.
The Bible highlights this for us in so many ways from emphasizing our choice of great friends to encouraging hospitality. Solomon reminds us, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion” (Eccl 4:9-10). Relationships are God’s gift, and summer offers a prime opportunity to strengthen these bonds. Host a fellowship gathering in your home, inviting others to share a meal and meaningful conversation. Plan intentional time with your family – whether a game night, outdoor games, a walk in the park, a simple meal together, maybe an intentional movie night. Be present; if possible, put away distractions like phones or schedules. These moments build memories and nurture the relationships God has entrusted to you. Do not let the busyness of summer steal this irreplaceable time.
How can you practically embrace these priorities?
Consider some of these activities to make the most of your summer:
- Attend church regularly. Worshiping with God’s people renews your spirit and keeps your focus on Him (Heb 10:24-25).
- Serve through your church. Join a ministry team, whether teaching children, greeting visitors, or helping with outreach events.
- Serve at church. Look for practical ways to meet needs, such as organizing supplies or assisting with facility upkeep.
- Participate in life groups. Engage in a small group for study and prayer, building deeper connections with fellow believers.
- Open your home for fellowship. Invite others for a meal or a time of sharing, fostering community and encouragement.
- Spend time with family. Prioritize moments with your spouse, children, extended family, or church family, creating traditions and memories that last.
- Catch moments as they come. Be intentional in everyday interactions – whether a conversation with a friend or a spontaneous outing with your kids.
