Honoring Our Veterans: Grateful for Their Sacrifice
On this Veterans Day, November 11, our hearts turn with deep gratitude toward the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Their courage, duty, and love for country reflect the heart of Christlike sacrifice.
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” John 15:13).
In every generation, from the birth of our nation to the present, that love has marked the life of every veteran. Since the Revolutionary War, more than forty-one million Americans have worn our nation’s uniform. Today, approximately 15.8 million living veterans call the United States home – each one a living witness to courage, endurance, and service. They represent every background and every region of our country, yet share one calling – to stand for freedom.
Their service did not end when they returned home. Many still carry unseen suffering – memories that weigh heavy, wounds that linger, and sacrifices that few will ever know. Yet, they continue to serve: leading families, strengthening communities, mentoring others, and living out the values they defended. We owe them not only thanks but understanding, friendship, and support.
As believers, we are called to love and serve those who have served us. Reach out to a veteran this week. Offer a prayer, a note, or a meal. Volunteer where you can. In every act of gratitude, we reflect the heart of Christ Himself.
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11).
May the Lord guard and bless our veterans – those who stood watch for us – and may we stand faithfully beside them.
