As a seminary professor, biblical counselor, and pastor, often I listen to individuals who care deeply for the Scriptures, but, in their passion, almost blindly fail to submit to what it says regarding love, unity, and one-anothering. In the most current debate among many evangelicals regarding social justice, I have noticed similar characteristics among those taking sides on social media (more on the controversy another day). Now cue all the other theological debates and heated discussions over Scripture as well. Recently Randy Alcorn wrote of the critical importance of letting Scripture be Scripture through the pen of Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon rarely twisted the Bible to fit his theology and demonstrates the importance of consistency with Scripture over consistency with one’s preferred theological leanings – regardless of whether one is influenced more by the Bible itself or through life experience. This short blog reminds us of how essential it is for each of us to read the Scriptures with balance from one of the greatest of preachers.
