“Aim at Nothing, You’ll Hit it Every Time” was one of the favorite quotes from my friend and former professor Dr. James T. Sewell. He sought to instill a passion in every one of his students that living for Christ must include proper focus, goals, and intention.

God deserves our best.

The Apostle Paul summarized the Christian life in a very familiar verse:

31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

This statement comes at the end of a discussion on Christian liberty, as it relates to eating and drinking meats offered to idols (1 Cor 10:23-33). Paul makes it clear that regarding daily activities of any Christian, the Christian must do so with a clear conscience and a proper motivation – the glory of God.

Aim at Nothing

One of the challenges as you start a new day is to determine what will be your goals throughout the day. For what will you strive? How will you go about your tasks? What will be on your mind as you engage people, opportunities, and problems?

For too many of us, we can get started pursuing a day without any forethought or intentional planning past our immediate tasks. In fact, on a busy day, it is easy to wake up and be consumed by the looming “To-Do” list. We also may mindlessly go through a day, a week, or even longer at a particular task without focus.

Two Encouragements

First, make sure that you intentionally make today about God’s glory. Stop a few times throughout your day to assess your ultimate goal for the day.

Second, create goals for your tasks. As Dr. Sewell would say, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” Do not let your day get away from you without specific goals all motivated by the glory of God.
