For those of us who practice and teach biblical counseling, the fact that biblical counseling is cross cultural is not news. For many others, they may not realize the significant impact biblical counselors have all over the globe. As I have experienced in various cultures, biblical counseling transfers cultures because of its intensely biblical nature. Salvation and sanctification of individuals goes beyond the States. Problems are universal. Variant and unhelpful ways of viewing people and problems are entrenched all over the world, often without a clearly defined alternative. Those who believe and practice biblical counseling seek to bridge that gap.
Biblical Counseling at Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary
This past week at the conclusion of the World Missions Forum, the speaker invited those who are committed to overseas missions ministry to come forward. He desired to have others pray over them and ask God to help them as they continue to study, prepare, and ultimately head to the mission field. As students all over the audience moved toward the front, I made three observations about the group.
First, about one-third of the audience of students made their way up front as a visible demonstration of their commitment for missions. How exciting for us! Our students at BBC/TS love the people around the world and desire to minister to them. Missions is alive and well at BBC/TS.
Second, several biblical counseling majors joined that group at the front. I could not see the group well enough or get a good count; however, a great contingent of BC majors are committed to taking the Gospel cross culturally around the world.
Third, many of the other students (most of whom were missions majors, which is still our largest major at BBC/TS) are pursuing a minor in biblical counseling. All missions students take a couple of BC classes; however, many of our missions majors recognize the incredible value of knowing how to minister God’s Word to hurting people cross culturally.
Our Students Join Graduates and Biblical Counselors All Over the World
As these students prepare for BC ministry as part of Gospel-centered, Gospel-minded, and Gospel-spreading local churches all over the globe, they join so many other missionaries committed to biblical counseling who already serve globally. The world-wide impact of BC continues to grow. I’m grateful for trips to teach BC in Asia, Central America, and South America over the past two years. This January I get to lead another group of BBC students to the Dominican Republic to teach and serve a ministry who applies the BC model to their church, school, and orphanage. The growing impact of BC in the global work of Christ is incredible. Check out this list of biblical counseling organizations all over the world.
