As we begin a new day and week, many different goals, agendas, projects, and just the busyness of life crowds our schedules and our thinking. As the week heats up, many of those same things for which we are concerned potentially steal our energy, effort, and focus from what is better.

Pursue the Right Thing

Jesus helps us as we consider our day and week…

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:31-23)

Seek First the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness

As Jesus discusses both our lives (eating and drinking) and bodies (what we wear), He says to not focus on those things alone. In fact, He reminds us that a sign of an unbeliever (i.e., Gentile) is worrying about those things. On the contrary, a follower of Christ trusts God the Father’s provisions, love, and care. God knows whatever you need.

Therefore, Jesus says, we as disciples of Christ should seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. In other words, we seek or focus on those things consistent with our relationship in Christ through salvation. Whereas our temptation is to focus our attention on the cares of the world primarily, Jesus challenges us to have an overriding concern for the things of God.

We strive to live righteous in practice as we are in position. Jesus provides for us His logic – especially as One Who knows God intimately. If God provided us life, bodies, and salvation, then it stands to reason that God will provide for our life and body as we focus on living as a saved person. We seek to live consistent as a righteous person. Who you trust is visibly demonstrated by what you do.

Therefore, today and this week, focus on what honors God, promotes righteousness, and fits your salvation instead of being completely distracted and worrying over lesser things.
