Does the day of the week determine how you celebrate Christmas?

Consider Sunday for instance…

I went to church. We sang Christmas carols that all highlighted Christ. There was a message that talked about the birth of Jesus. We prayed and thanked God for sending His Son. We were challenged to live with a spirit of gratitude for the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

What about Monday…Tuesday…Wednesday…Thursday…Friday…and Saturday?

How have we celebrated on these days? Our Christmas music? Our parties and activities? Our thoughts? Our worries? Our prayers? Our schedules?

Christmas on Sunday

We celebrate Jesus on Sunday at church and tell each other how important Jesus is for living.

Sunday connects us with a scared young mother-to-be who turns into a young mother.

We find a confused fiance who respects, marries, and protects his pregnant bride and new little son.

Inn keepers, shepherds, wise men, prophets, and an older widow lady all fit in the biblical narrative.

Angels appear multiple times. They tell Joseph, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matt 1:21). They sing, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14).

We are reminded as we celebrate on Sundays that in Christ there is hope, peace, love, faith, and security.

Christmas on Monday – Saturday

How does your celebration change the rest of the week?

Does your focus shift from Jesus, His birth, His life, and the true gift of Christmas to everything else?

Is it possible that you celebrate Christmas on Sundays differently than you do the rest of the week?

Does Jesus and the birth pale into snow, presents, mistletoe, Santa, reindeer, elves, parties, dirty Santas, secret Santas, and great movies?

Celebrate Jesus Every Day

Don’t get me wrong, I love all these things. Possibly I’m aware of how easy it is to shift focus from One person Jesus to everything else because it is so easy to do in my life as well.

Let me suggest four ideas for you to celebrate Jesus every day this Christmas season:

First, read some kind of Advent reading. I suggest a simple one here. Even if you are behind, get started where you are.

Second, make sure your activities do not pull you out of church this Christmas season. Be in church every Sunday at least so that you can better tether your heart to Jesus Christ the rest of the week.

Third, intentionally listen to Christmas music that highlights Christ and life in Christ versus merely Christmas tradition.

Fourth, have fun doing the things you enjoy most about Christmas, but set reminders on your phone or in other places to help remind your heart and mind what it truly most important at Christmas.

Every day we get to celebrate our Savior, Jesus. He came, He lived, He bore, He died, He resurrected, He ascended, and now He sits on the right hand of God. Jesus.
