The hummingbirds in the featured picture today look a bit grainy because the sun is not quite up yet. Moments after daybreak, I started hearing the chirping of the hummingbirds just outside the patio doors where I sat. I began to watch. What started with one soon became over one dozen. (You can see it all below in the one minute video!)

A hummingbird feeder buzzing with birds and the sun is not even out.

Are you as smart as these hummingbirds?

Morning dawned and the hummingbirds awoke. They did not stay in their nest resting, nor did they sit around chirping at each other. Instead, they woke up and immediately began to eat. Eating early and often is necessary for hummingbirds.

Why? Because hummingbirds must eat all day long in order to survive. Their metabolism is so high that they must eat something every 10-15 minutes. In fact, they consume about half their body weight in bugs and nectar throughout every day. Without a bird feeder, they will visit between 1,000-2,000 flowers in a day’s time.[1]

They cannot afford to sit in their nest all day without consuming food. Unless they consume food, their life is in jeopardy.

Consider Your Spiritual Walk with God

What about your spiritual walk with God? Are you as smart as a hummingbird?

How long does it take you on a given day to get up, get awake, and begin to consume spiritual nourishment?

Paul challenges Timothy to nourish himself daily on the Word of God (1 Tim 4:6). In the Old Testament, God tells His people that man does not live by bread alone (Deut 8:2-3). Jesus repeated the same when He was on earth (Matt 4:4).

I love the illustration the Prophet Isaiah uses:

1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Incline your ear, and come to Me.
Hear, and your soul shall live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—
The sure mercies of David. (Isa 55:1-3)

Bottom Line ~ You Need God’s Word to Live and Thrive

It is fairly simple ~ you need God’s Word to live and thrive spiritually daily. Consider the following four questions related to your own spiritual nourishment and growth:

  • How long does it typically take you before you think about spiritual nourishment each day?
  • How quickly do you turn to God’s Word to begin your day in meditation and prayer?
  • Do you see the priority of your Bible study, meditation, and prayer as you do your physical food?
  • If you are spiritually malnourished, what can you do specifically to do better?
