Jesus is all-powerful ~ A reflection from Luke 7-8

Sometimes it helps just to get a simple word of truth. The teenagers I’m around call it “spilling the tea.” Occasionally it is good for someone to give a word of truth and put it out there for others to consider.

That’s what I want to do for you today. Recently, I wrote about the power of God in a #OneMinuteMonday post; today, I want to expand on it and just give you some simple thought that will take just a couple of minutes to review. These may help you if you face some tough issues today.

You Serve an All-Powerful God!

As Jesus walked with His disciples and taught them, Jesus taught them about Himself. On this particular day, Jesus fills it with this simple lesson ~ He is all-powerful.

In Luke 7, while in Capernaum, a centurion sent representatives to ask Jesus to heal his servant. Jesus began to go that way when the centurion sent friends and said not to worry about coming, just “say the word and my servant will be healed.” When Jesus heard this, He responded, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith,  not even in Israel.” Luke continues, “And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick” (Luke 7:1-10). Jesus both had the power to heal him and did healed Him ~ from a distance.

The next day Jesus walks a day’s journey to Nain. When He arrives, he encounters a funeral possession where a widow woman was burying her only son. Jesus walks up to the open casket and touches the casket. He says to the woman, “Do not weep.” Then, says to the dead young man in the casket, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Luke reports, “So he who was dead sat up and began to speak.” Regarding the crowd, “Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, ‘A great prophet has risen up among us”; and , “God has visited His people.” And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region (Luke 7:11-17).

Also in Luke 7, when John the Baptist sent messengers to check on Jesus, Luke reports, “And that very hour [Jesus] cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight” (Luke 7:20).

In Luke 8, Jesus launches out with the disciples across the Sea of Galilee when a storm arises. The disciples believe they are all going to die. But instead, Jesus demonstrates power over nature by calming the wind and the waves immediately with His spoken word. Luke reports: “And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, ‘Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!’” (Luke 8:25)

They arrive on the other side where they are immediately met by a man who is demon possessed. This man suffered greatly. Homeless and naked, he desperately needed help. Jesus commanded the demons to leave him and they went into a bunch of pigs who immediately ran down the hill and drowned in the Sea of Galilee. The man sat clothed, of his right mind, and worshiped Jesus. Relieved from these demons, Luke reports, And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him” (Luke 8:39).

Jesus returns to Galilee across the sea again where he is met with a great multitude. In this crowd Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, met Jesus on the shoreline. He explained his only daughter was very sick. Jesus started to leave for Jairus’ house.

But on the way, Jesus was stopped by a woman with a twelve-year long blood issue. She touched the corner of Jesus’ garment and was immediately healed. Jesus talked with her. “She declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. And He said to her, ‘Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace’” (Luke 8:47-48).

In the meantime, while Jesus talked with her, another person arrived and reported to Jairus that his daughter had died. “But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well’” (Luke 8:50). When they arrived at his house, sure enough she was dead. However, Jesus entered into his house and Luke reports: “But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, ‘Little girl, arise.’ Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened” (Luke 8:54-56).

Be Encouraged, Trust Him, Have Faith Today

No matter what you are facing today, take time to be encouraged that He is all-powerful! Trust Him. Have faith in Him.

You serve an all-powerful God. He demonstrated so long ago on a day filled with miracles. Nothing is different today. He is just as powerful, just as caring, just as compassionate, and just as interested in your life circumstances as well.

You can trust Him. As Jesus encouraged them, have faith and call out to Him this week. He’s got this.
