In the Gospels, Luke tells the story of Jesus walking into an unnamed village. As He does, he comes upon ten lepers. Because of its viral and physical spread, those lepers were forced outside the town and away from others. They were allowed to go to the synagogue; however, since they both were diseased and considered unclean, they would have to stay behind a ten foot curtain there. Upon seeing Jesus, all ten lepers in unison begged Jesus for mercy. Jesus grant them mercy, as you will see below, and heals them. After receiving mercy, nine of them left and only one returned to thank Jesus. Today, will you be the one?
Jesus Heals the Lepers – Luke 17:11-19
Upon hearing their request, Jesus sent the ten lepers to go see the priest in order to get cleared of the quarantine. Notice how Luke tells it:
And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. (Luke 17:13-14)
The law spelled out that the priests were to determine if they had been cleansed or not which was an eight-day process. Jesus tells them to head over to the priest’s in order to begin that process.
Will You Be the One?
Luke continues:
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.
17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:15-19)
All ten received the grace of healing.
Only one returned to Jesus to praise and worship Him.
That one – a Samaritan – also received forgiveness for his sin.
How Will You Handle Grace This Week?
As Jesus grants you grace this week, how will you handle it?
Will you be like the ten? Will you be happy for the grace and run with it – off to live life however you wish?
Or, rather, will you be like the one? He received God’s grace then stopped to actually worship the One Who provided it. He entered into a personal relationship with the Grace-giver. One man – the foreigner – actually stopped to worship.
Which will you be?
