Knowing the reason behind a particular action, word, or attitude is important. If you are asked to do something or if you are told about another person who did something, knowing “Why” is important.
As we start a new week where some of you will head off to work, others stay-at-home to work, others will volunteer in your community, and others do so many other activities, we each will potentially face those around us who dismiss Jesus Christ, rail against Him, or otherwise reject the Gospel. We will engage them and their message in various places in person, online, or possibly in our own thought processes. As you do, it is essential to remember the “Why” of Jesus’ coming.
Knowing “Why” is important.
Various times, Jesus explains why He came to earth. Every time He made such a statement, they were variations of bringing glory to God while doing something particular. In Luke 19, Jesus eloquently articulated why He came. He explained to Zacchaeus:
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10).
Jesus clearly spells out why He came: To seek and to save the lost.
As You Go About Your New Day and Week
As you go about your new day and week, keep Jesus’ words in mind. Let me give you a few suggestions…
- When your own sin discourages you, remind yourself that Jesus came to seek and to save sinners just like you. There’s no reason to believe that your sin makes Jesus recoil away from you. No. Instead, dealing with your sin motivated Jesus to come in the first place.
- When you meet other sinners and what they do discourages you, then remind yourself again that Jesus came to seek and to save people just like this person who has discouraged you. Jesus came for the other person to show him or her mercy just as He came for you to show you mercy.
- When you engage people around you casually throughout your day and week, remember that Jesus came to seek and to save those exact people. Therefore, pray for them, demonstrate God’s love to them, and share the Gospel – the Good News! – with those same people. What Good New? That Jesus came to seek and to save those who are lost.
Knowing “Why” is important! Jesus told us why. He came to seek and to save the lost. Praise Him eternally!
