As we celebrated our 20th anniversary as a church this weekend, we focused our attention on what we have been doing since day one. Our goals for life in our church have not changed since the first Sunday on March 31, 2002. Paul makes it clear what our message is and our goal.

Our Message and Goal

First, our message. Notice how Paul describes it here.

To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily. (Col 1:27-29, emphasis mine)

Our message is about Jesus Christ. The best we can give people is Jesus. The answer to people’s problems starts and ends with the sufficiency of Christ.

Jesus changes us. When Jesus moves into our lives at salvation, the old leaves and the new arrives. The power of sin is broken, although the presence of sin still remains. We are hid in Christ and enjoy all the benefits of being in Christ. Total transformation begins at the heart. The indwelling presence of Jesus Christ changes everything. Certainly, as Paul states, this is the hope of glory. Jesus changes life today and guarantees the reality of our hope for the eternal future – hope that will not disappoint.

The message impacts the goal as well. Our goal for every day of the twenty years: that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.

We strive to help each other become mature in Jesus. Churches seemingly can have many goals as you observe them around the world. Yet, the church ultimately must produce those who are mature in Jesus. How? It begins with preaching which both admonishes and teaches in all wisdom. As they become mature in Christ, it impacts life in every other way in the body. One anothers. Fellowship. Prayer.

We head toward the next twenty!

As we move past our 20th anniversary, we look forward to the next twenty. Our responsibilities remain the same. The message has not and does not change. Christ in you. The goal does not either. That we may present every person mature in Christ.

Until Christ returns, may that be true.
