Iron Sharpens Iron

You play a role in the lives of your friends. We often may not consider what our role is in a particular friendship; however, as followers of Jesus Christ, there is a specific role we are to play. Friendship involves more than just simple fun.

Notice this familiar Proverb:

As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. (Proverbs 27:17)

Iron Sharpens Iron

When iron is rubbed against another piece of iron, it sharpens it, as well as shapes it. The rubbing of the one against another creates some sparks; however, they are helpful. This process makes the sharpened or shapened piece better, more useful, or restored.

So a Friend Sharpens the Countenance of a Friend

In a similar way, people can help each other improve as well. Conversations and intentional time spent with another friend help develop one’s character. The word countenance translates the Hebrew word for face. Literally, one man sharpens the face of his fellow man. Allen Ross points out that the word face must mean here the personality or the character of the individual. Interaction between two friends make them both sharper together.[1]

As conversations take place, one friend benefits from the other. Discussions. Constructive criticism. Answers to questions. Helping one another. Suggestions. Ideas. And, this like continues.

This best takes place when done intentionally. Sometimes we may refer to this kind of deepening relationship as an accountability partner. At other times, we may not refer to the relationship as anything other than a friend.

Be Intentional This Week

As you begin a new day and week, strive to be helped by and help your friends. Listen well. Ask good questions. Put some effort in contributing to those around you. Do not forget, you play a role. As another great proverb puts it:

He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20)
