Father’s Day annually brings joy to many as we get to celebrate the man God gave to us as our dad – and those who stepped in where necessary as a granddad, a godly man in the church, or a caring friend. For some, this day brings many memories of days gone by when you could spend time with your dad. For others, miles separate us. Any of us who get to enjoy this day with our dad must count this day as fortunate. Celebrating fathers on Father’s Day does two things for us: we remember with gratitude and receive a great challenge as men.

Today, we also stop to remember our wonderful Heavenly Father. Isn’t it amazing for those of us with a relationship with Jesus Christ that God chose to be our Father? Adopted. Loved. Forever in His presence. Our Father.

God, Our Father

Consider this beautiful passage from the Apostle Paul related to God, our Father.

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”

17 Therefore

“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
18 “I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”

Did you see those beautiful words? God chose to be our God, to make us His people, to dwell in us, walk among us, and be our Father.

“I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters.”

Again, isn’t that amazing?

Regardless of who you are and your experience here on earth with your own father, praise God, He has made us His sons and daughters and has chosen specifically to be our Father. For this, we rejoice!

Always with us – we are never alone.

Walking with us – we always have a companion.

His people – we belong.

How Should We Respond to This Great News?

With all these wonderful truths about being God’s very own children, how should we respond? Thankfully, He tells us.

He tells us to flee from idols and follow Him faithfully.

What kind of people? God’s kind of people – those who love and serve Him faithfully.

For those who read this and are fathers, that’s our goal today in fatherhood. We strive to be God’s kind of person for our families, for our churches, for our neighborhoods, and for the world around us. Where we see those who are fatherless, we strive to serve and love them well. Where those who have had unfaithful fathers, we strive to live consistent in front of them too.

For those of you who are not fathers or are estranged from your children and grandchildren, look around you to see who else you can serve. There are many in our world that need the love and example of our Heavenly Father lived out among them too. You can do that.

Celebrating Fathers on Father’s Day – a Prayer and Hope

We celebrate with gratitude our Father in Heaven who helps us, grants us wisdom, cares for us, protects us, and loves us.

Further, we celebrate our earthly fathers and grandfathers. What great joy they bring to us. We recognize that our experiences are all different and some have not had pleasant experiences. Sadly, as imperfect people, some fathers do not honor the Lord.

As fathers, we hope that we will live consistent with our heavenly Father and consistent with the Scriptures. For those like me who have been blessed with children, what a great challenge we share as dads. May God grant us wisdom as we seek to live consistently in Christ, leading our children toward a well-balanced life of godliness, biblical manhood and womanhood, and love.

May God grant each of us men wisdom from His Word and discernment to live it out in daily living as we instruct and provide examples for those around us – our own children and those we get to influence.
