Hear and Obey

Two of the wisest words ever given: hear and obey.

Jesus is the one who shares these two words. He teaches this principle in both the Sermon on the Mount and the Sermon on the Plains.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says:

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. (Matthew 6:24-29)

In the Sermon on the Plains, Jesus says:

46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:46-49)

Evidently, this was a common illustration Jesus used in teaching.

Hear and Obey

Jesus referred to the wise person in both stories as the person who hears and obeys.

To hear refers to listening to God’s Word.

To obey refers to obeying God’s Word.

To hear and obey means the follower of Jesus Christ reads God’s Word, considers what it says, and does it.

Hearing implies you receive the Word. Reading, memorizing, meditating, listening to podcasts, listening to sermons, and discussing what you receive, all compliment each other in the hearing process. What you take in, you obey.

The fool hears without obeying.

This Week – Hear and Obey

Today and this week make sure that you take time to live wisely – like the person who built his house on the rock. Listen, consider, and obey.

When you look at, remember, and do God’s Word, you will be blessed.
