His Mercy Is More

This weekend I spoke on Acts 5:1-16 where Ananias and Sapphira lie to the Holy Spirit. What an incredible passage. Motivated by a desire for their reputation, they purposed in their heart to deceive the people around them with the selflessness of their offering. They sold their property for a high price, kept some of it back for themselves, and gave the rest to the Apostles for the use of this brand new and growing church. They gave publicly with the implication that they gave 100% of their sale to the church, as Barnabas and others had done. However, under the influence of the Spirit, Peter confronted Ananias, and then later Sapphira. Under the judgment of God for their lies, they both died. Knowing my own tendency to sin, I walked away from the passage with a great appreciation for God’s daily mercy. For a moment, consider this verse and song – His Mercy Is More.

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

VERSE 1
What love could remember no wrongs we have done
Omniscient, all knowing, He counts not their sum
Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

VERSE 2
What patience would wait as we constantly roam
What Father, so tender, is calling us home
He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

VERSE 3
What riches of kindness he lavished on us
His blood was the payment, His life was the cost
We stood ‘neath a debt we could never afford
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

CHORUS
Praise the Lord
His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

I often find myself humming this chorus to myself and reflecting on the great news that His mercy is more – stronger than darkness, new every morn, our sins they are many, His mercy is more! What great news for all of us as we start our week.
