Memorial Day Preparation ~ Proud of these Children

This year our Trail Life and American Heritage Girls troops were blessed to help prepare the graves at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery. We were invited to spend the afternoon placing flags at the graves of the veterans. We joined others who were volunteering their time to make preparation for the Memorial Day celebration of our troops. To say the least, I am very proud of these children, their desire to honor the veterans, and their families who came with them to volunteer. A highlight of our day was placing a flag on the grave of Jack Drury, a World War II veteran of the merchant marine and a charter member of Sonrise.

Memorial Day remembers and honors all military personnel who died while in service of their country. Memorial Day especially emphasizes those who died as a result of battle. Often Memorial Day is marked by ceremonies in various national cemeteries and memorials. As we had the privilege to do, many times volunteers place American flags on each grave site. Memorial Day is celebrated annually on the last Monday of May, with a national moment of remembrance at 3:00 pm local time.

I hope you will enjoy some of their pictures below. The children had a wonderful time of reflection, conversations with parents and each other, volunteer service, and ice cream following their volunteer effort.

On this Memorial Day weekend, I am proud of these children and their families for their dedication to prepare the graves for special honor.

If you are a grandparent, parent, uncle or aunt, or family family, let me encourage you to do something special this weekend as well with a child.
