Who will you listen to this week?
We have so many voices in life all around us. People who love us. Friends. Others who care. Family. Church family. Plus, others who may be in business with us, live near us, or have shared values. And, as you know, there are even more. When we interact with the world around us, voices seek to influence us from every side. Billboards. Social media. Streaming. And more. The question as we get this week started, Who will you listen to this week?
As one of those voices, let me point you to another.
In preparation for preaching this past Sunday, I spent extra time in Proverbs. I was impressed once again with this particular passage:
Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?
She takes her stand on the top of the high hill,
Beside the way, where the paths meet.
She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:
“To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men. (Proverbs 8:1-5)
Let me suggest, as does Lady Wisdom in this speech, to listen to God’s voice of wisdom this week.
Lady wisdom cries out and lifts up her voice for you to listen to her. She calls out and her voice is to all of us.
Plus, she is urgently trying to speak to us. Notice the places she stands: she stands on the high hill so people can hear, stands on the busy street intersection where people are passing, and stands out by the gates where there is business, court, and where people are coming and going. Lady Wisdom is everywhere she believes people are. She is striving to reach out to us, speak to us, and help us.
Will you listen to her?
Will you listen to Lady Wisdom? Her voice points us to God. While you consider if you will or not, let me share her final thoughts on why it would be important to listen to her this week.
“Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.
Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;
But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.” (Proverbs 8:32-36)
This week, let’s strive to listen to Lady Wisdom.
