Don’t Forget ~ God Is Covenant Faithful
Our family has chosen to use sunbeams shooting across the horizon as a providential reminder to think about God and heaven. We specifically think about eternity, heaven, and those who are with Christ awaiting our future reunion. We use those sun beams as superhighways from wherever we are at to high above where Jesus Christ is.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory (Col 3:1-4).
As we do, we are filled with gratitude for God’s faithfulness to us, anticipation of what God has promised which is still in store for us throughout eternity, and providentially taken out of our current situation upward to a better perspective on our day. Our thoughts are obediently taken high above to consider where Christ is, where we are hid in Christ, and our future hope as followers of His.
All of our future hope is contingent upon God’s covenant faithfulness. Unless God is faithful, we possess no hope whatsoever. However, since God is covenant faithful, we are filled with hope.
Why is covenant faithfulness important this today and this week?
In case you have missed the news this weekend, Israel has been invaded by Hamas in around thirty different locations this weekend. The entire southern region of Israel has turned into a war zone. Officially, Israel declared war on Hamas Sunday. They promise retaliation and justice for what took place on Saturday.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we need to remember three important passages this week as we think about what is going on over there. The first two are from Genesis. The third one is from the Psalms.
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. (Genesis 17:7)
In this passage, God makes an unconditional promise to Abraham. This promise flows out of His earlier promise in Genesis.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Genesis 12:2-3)
God promised Abraham that his descendants would be His people forever.
The third text is Psalm 136, which was written for public worship. The worship leader would make a statement about God, and the congregation would respond with the refrain, “His love endures forever.” All total, this occurs twenty-six times in this psalm. The phrase translated here, “His love endures forever,” is the single Hebrew word hesed, which literally means, “covenant faithful.” In this psalm, twenty-six times the Jews replied back to the worship leader, “God is covenant faithful.” God is always loyal to His promises. In other words, the psalm declares God’s steadfast faithfulness to His own promises.
Therefore, this week, as you hear the news and think about what is going on in Isreal, please do not forget that God is covenant faithful – not because Israel deserves it; but rather, because He made a promise to their forefather Abraham. The Israelites are His people, even when they do not act like it or recognize it. We need to humbly remember God is covenant faithful to His special people. As we talk with others, interact with social media, and pray, Don’t Forget ~ God Is Covenant Faithful!
