When We See Christ
Written in 1941, this beautiful song celebrate the future day When We See Christ. The lyrics represent the realities of life. As long as we are still on our journey through this life, we will continue to experience trials, heartaches, tears, separations, and disappointments. And at times these experiences will be so very hard to face and bear. In these moments, it is easy to want to murmur and complain. Yet, in these times, we are reminded to look for Jesus’ return when we will be reminded that it will be worth it all. We know that God is always with His children and He knows all of their cares. And we know that He has promised never to leave us or forsake us. And sometimes it takes us time to recognize and apply these truths and experience the supernatural peace that only He can give.

The Theology
As I mentioned above, trials and suffering are part of this life. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). The Apostle Paul declared that “through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). The Apostle Peter wrote extensively about the reality of suffering in the Christian walk in 1 Peter. In these moments, it is easy to murmur, complain, and be down, we need to take time to remember Christ’s soon return. In that time, all tears will be gone!
The song further reminds us that we will recognize the Bible truth from Paul that our trouble is truly light and momentary (2 Cor 4:16-18). In these times, Jesus knows, Jesus cares, and Jesus provides us the strength to run the race. The Hebrews writer reminds us, “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.” (Hebrews 12:2-3).
In the third verse the writer talks about sharing the future joys of heaven with these lyrics: “We’ll share the joys of heaven: a harp, a home, a crown.” We will enjoy heaven but possibly not a harp. The Bible doesn’t speak to that particular joy of heaven. :)

Esther Kerr Rusthoi, author
Esther Kerr Rusthoi (February 21, 1909 – April 8, 1962) was an American author, poet, composer, singer, and pastor’s wife. She is best known for her hymn, “It Will be Worth it All, When We See Jesus.” Her husband was Rev. Howard Rusthoi who also served as overseas chaplain in the armed forces. Together they were known as “revival broadcasters”.
