Dominican Republic Mission Trip

And we are off!

Would you pray for us this week? This afternoon, January 21st, we embarked on our mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The group consists of students from Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary (biblical counseling and missions students) and Sonrise Baptist Church members. Similar to our 2020 trip, I will speak at a conference hosted by the Gracia Iglesia Bautista Church, and the team will primarily serve at Fundacion Red de Misericordia, the Mercy Network Foundation, an orphanage for Dominican children. Started by Senora Olga Arocha, in its twelfth year, the foundation serves over 100 children.

Serving the Orphanage

Throughout the week, our group will serve the children through Bible lessons, crafts, and game time. While the children are in school, the group will serve the Foundation on various projects. Most days, the group also has the privilege of serving the smallest of the children in the nursery.

Would you please pray that we will get to know the children and serve them well? All of these children have had some form of trauma in their lives. We have the privilege of sharing the love of Christ with each of them.

In this orphanage, the principles of biblical counseling are grafted into the DNA of its operation. From daily training to discipline, the staff serve from a robust view of sanctification. They use David Powlison’s Three Tree Model of sanctification. Throughout the orphanage, nice posters remind the children and workers of his sanctification model as well as Ken Sande’s diagrams from Peacemaker.

While we are here, I will have the privilege of providing some training hours for the orphanage staff and teachers.

Serving the Church

For the third time, I have the privilege of being the speaker at a conference hosted by their church. This year they asked me to teach on Restoring the Brethren or Restoration Ministry. I will speak five times alongside some of their pastors. I appreciate their trust and consider it an incredible privilege to serve them.

Serving for Christ ~ Please pray for us on this Dominican Republic Mission Trip.

Our goal is to serve well these eight days we are in the Dominican Republic. With a busy schedule while we are here, and coming off of a two-week bout with the flu, please pray for my energy level and strength. Further, please pray that each of us would live out what Jesus’ half brother James calls pure religion.

If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:26-27)
