Two Commitments for Your Week

Yesterday, we considered 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17. In that post, we emphasized two steps to help us persevere in trials, suffering, and crisis. The first step: Stand Fast, and the second step: Hold the traditions which you were taught. In addition to these two steps, the Apostle Paul reminded us of God’s eternal love and hope. With these things in mind, we face a new week. As we do, will you make these two commitments for your week?

The Two Commitments

First, hold the tradition tightly!

By hold the traditions, we refer to intentionally remembering what we have learned through the Word of God, either by the spoken Word through teaching and preaching, or from your personal study of God’s Word.

Second, stand fast or stand firm!

To stand fast or stand firm implies that you do or say whatever is necessary to persevere. In other words, you obey whatever it you have heard or learned. One obeys whatever God desires or is wise in a particular situation.

Therefore, the two commitments to practice help put you in a strong position to persevere.

The Benefits

If you choose to 1) Remember and 2) Obey, then you will make progress this week toward faithfulness and perseverance. Each of us can take the first step this week toward remembering and obeying. You can begin by considering your particular suffering. Ask yourself some questions like: Where does the Bible describe this kind of suffering? What are key areas where I need to obey in suffering? What should I say to others in the midst of my suffering? What should I do? Are there any areas of wisdom I need to seek out to either help in remembering or obeying?

These will get you started. The hope is that you will begin walking toward greater perseverance in the race that is set before you for the glory of God.
