Honoring God’s Gift of Mothers
On this Mother’s Day, my heart overflows with gratitude for the remarkable women God has placed in our lives – mothers, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, and sisters in Christ – who reflect His love, strength, and grace. Not only these ladies in my life, but the fact that God has gifted us as people. We pause to honor these women, not only for their nurturing care but also for their vital role in God’s redemptive story in each of us. In the spirit of honoring God’s gift of mothers to us as individuals, those in the family of God, and as people, let us consider five brief thoughts today.
Moms as God’s Most Valuable Players: Reflecting His Love
Proverbs 31:28 declares, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” Mothers are God’s most valuable players in the home, church, and community, reflecting Christ’s sacrificial love through their daily acts of service. Whether preparing meals, offering a listening ear, or praying fervently, mothers mirror the heart of Jesus, who “did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Their love points us to the Savior, who laid down His life for us. This Mother’s Day, we rise up to call mothers blessed, thanking God for their Christlike devotion.
God’s Comfort for Every Heart on Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day evokes a spectrum of emotions – joy for some, sorrow for others. Psalm 34:18 assures us, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” God sees every heart, whether a mother rejoicing in her children, a woman grieving a loss, or someone longing for motherhood. Today, I think of a friend who has recently lost her son. She is like so many others on this day. I also think of another who has recently lost her mom. As a pastor and biblical counselor, I am reminded that God’s comfort is sufficient for every season. He is near to the weary, the hurting, and the hopeful, offering peace that surpasses understanding (Phil 4:7). Today, we pray for all women this Mother’s Day, whatever comfort they need from God, asking God to envelop them in His tender care.
Raising Faith: Moms as Disciple-Makers
Mothers play a pivotal role in raising the next generation to know and love Christ. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul writes, “When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.” Mothers like Lois and Eunice are disciple-makers, passing down a legacy of faith through their words, prayers, and example. Their influence shapes children who walk in truth (3 John 1:4). I never tire watching my own wife serve our children, and now grandchildren, just as my own mom did my siblings and me. Moms, your bedtime prayers, Bible stories, and faithful witness are not in vain. You are building a foundation for eternity.
A Mother’s Strength in Christ
Motherhood is a calling marked by both joy and trial, requiring supernatural strength. Moms need God’s special strength in every season of their children’s lives. Possibly in the days and weeks past birth seem to be some of the most volatile, yet every day God’s strength is so necessary. Mothers draw upon Christ’s power to navigate sleepless nights, challenging seasons, and the weight of responsibility. Their resilience reflects the One who endured the cross for our sake (Heb 12:2). To every mother feeling weary, rest in Christ’s promise to renew your strength (Is 40:31). Your labor is a testimony to God’s sustaining grace.
The Family of God: Honoring All Women
Mother’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only biological mothers but all women who nurture and mentor within the family of God. This has to be one of the special blessings of being in the family of God. Galatians 6:10 exhorts us, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” We honor every woman – mothers, spiritual mothers, sisters, and daughters – who reflects God’s heart through her love and service. Whether you guide a child, mentor a younger believer, or pray for your church, your contribution strengthens the family of faith.
Today: A Call to Gratitude and Worship
Many of us will gather at churches on this Mother’s Day. Let us worship the God who designed motherhood and entrusted women with such a sacred calling. May we together honor mothers, lift up those who are hurting, and praise our Heavenly Father for His perfect love. Let us give thanks to God, who works through mothers to display His glory. To mothers and women everywhere, you are a gift from God. Your love, faith, and strength point us to Christ. May you experience His joy and peace this Mother’s Day.
