Trusting God’s Justice in the Russia-Ukraine War
As we step into another week, the Russia0-Ukraine war continues to burden our hearts with images of suffering, injustice, and ongoing conflict. Throughout the weekend, news reports emphasized the escalation between both sides. A second round of peace talks have been announced, as both Russia and Ukraine launched simultaneous drone attacks on each other. We know of Christians in both countries who are struggling. We are concerned for their wellbeing and the wellbeing of those effected in both countries as well. In light of this, Psalm 33:4-5 offers a steady anchor in these turbulent times, reminding us that God’s truth and justice prevail, even amidst chaos. As we reflect on this ongoing conflict, consider how this passage provides us guidance and a way to respond in a God-honoring way.
“For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord” (Ps 33:4-5).
The Russia-Ukraine war, ongoing since February 2022 and now stretching into June 2025, brings daily reports of pain and loss. It is tempting to grow numb or overwhelmed, but Psalm 33:4-5 assures us: God’s word is right, His work is true, and He loves righteousness and justice. His goodness fills the earth, even in conflict. God sees every person in Russia and Ukraine – each one made in His image, with each life precious. He is neither indifferent to their suffering nor the evil fueling this war. We know God’s justice will prevail.
So, what can we do as this moves into another month? How can we respond?
First, pray. Take one minute to intercede: ask God to protect the vulnerable, provide for refugees, and bring peace to the Russia-Ukraine war. Further, pray for the missionaries, all the nationals who are Christians, the many pastors seeking to serve their congregations, and the seminaries effected by the ongoing crisis.
Second, trust. God’s faithful character assures us He is working, even when we cannot see it. We rest in God’s providential control, even though so many evil people continue to propagate the trouble. We strive to remember God is active in the affairs of man as it brings about His will.
Third, act. Consider supporting relief efforts through giving to a missions agency, your church, or helping raise awareness. Even our prayer reflects God’s love and helps demonstrate compassion.
It is critical to keep your heart tender to this crisis. Three responses that each one of us can have: Pray earnestly, trust confidently, and act compassionately. The God who loves justice is with us and those suffering. Even though the fighting continues, we must keep trusting God’s justice in the Russia-Ukraine war. It is through these responses that we can help carry their burden today, resting in God’s righteous plan.
