How Can I Find Peace with all the Recent Crisis? – Finding Refuge in God’s Powerful Presence: Reflections on Psalm 46
The past few weeks have been filled with news of devastating destruction. The Texas flooding alone would be enough; yet there have been more. The question we answer today is, “How can I find peace with all the recent crisis?” The good news is that you can be encouraged and uplifted by the timeless truths of Psalm 46, which reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (v. 1). This powerful passage speaks to us today, offering us hope and assurance no matter what challenges we face. Let us look at the text itself and then explore how God’s presence can transform our perspective and fill us with unshakable confidence.
Psalm 46
1. Resting in God’s Presence During Natural Crises (vv. 1-3)
Life can feel overwhelming at times – natural disasters, personal challenges, or moments when everything seems to unravel. Psalm 46:1-3 assures us that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. The psalmist explains, even if the mountains quake or the seas roar, we do not need to fear. God’s presence is a safe haven – a place of peace no matter the chaos. Wherever you are today, take comfort: God is with you, and He is stronger than any storm.
2. Security in God’s Presence Amid Political Turmoil (vv. 4-7)
Further, in a world filled with political division and uncertainty, it is easy to feel anxious. Yet, the psalmist in Psalm 46:4-7 paints a vivid picture of God’s city, where His presence flows like a life-giving river, bringing joy and security. No matter the threats – whether global conflicts or personal struggles – God protects His people. He is our fortress, and the Lord of hosts is with us (v. 7). Let this truth anchor you: God’s presence is your ultimate security.
3. God’s Victory Is Certain (vv. 8-11)
He concludes the psalm in verses 8-11. Here he calls us to be still and know that He is God. What a powerful reminder that God wins in the end! His sovereignty will be exalted across the earth, and His presence never abandons His people. For those who trust Him, this is a promise of eternal victory. For those who do not yet know Him, it is an invitation to stop resisting and acknowledge His lordship. The message is clear: God’s plan prevails, and His love endures forever.
How can I find peace in the midst of crisis?
In one sentence: God is here today; God will be here forever. We can unconditionally trust God’s presence, for He is our refuge.
The Texas flooding has left many of us feeling helpless, but Psalm 46 reminds us that God’s strength is greater than any disaster. His presence is here to calm us, comfort us, and provide us peace. To flesh it out just a bit more, consider these three important implications of the text:
- Trust God as Your Refuge and Strength. God is not distant – He is Immanuel, God with us, through Jesus Christ. Just as He sustained Israel in battle and brought joy like a river to His city, He is close to you, offering His strength and peace to you as well. Jesus promised, “I am with you always” (Matt 28:20). Lean into that promise today, trusting God as your refuge.
- Walk in Confident Faith. Instead of giving in to fear or worry, let your confidence flow from God’s presence, power, and promises. As 1 John 5:4 says, “This is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” The world may fade, but those who trust in God endure forever (1 John 2:17). Walk with Him, knowing He is by your side.
- A Call to Those Far from God. For those who do not know God, Psalm 46 is both a warning and an invitation. Fighting against God is futile; His victory is certain (Rom 8:31-39). Yet, He lovingly invites everyone to turn to Him, find refuge in His grace, and join His eternal family. It is not too late to embrace His love.
So, Be Encouraged Today
No matter what you are facing, let Psalm 46 remind you that God is here today and forever. Storms may come, but God’s presence is your refuge. Focus on God and not your fear or uncertainties, rest in His strength, and walk confidently in your faith. Take a moment, as the psalmist encourages you, to be still and reflect on His nearness. In fact, take a moment today to pray Psalm 46:10, asking God to help you be still and trust His presence.
If there are others around you who need to hear about God’s nearness as well, share this encouragement with someone who needs it. Let us each live as people who know the Lord of Hosts is with us (Ps 46:11).
