A Few Thoughts about Today’s Funeral
by Kevin | Feb 28, 2026 | Christian Living, Community | 0 |
Today, as our community gathers to honor fallen Christian County sheriff deputies Gabriel Ramirez and Michael Hislope, we reflect on how to mourn with humility, show honor with reverence, and trust the nearness of God to the brokenhearted.

In the wake of the tragic loss of two local sheriff’s deputies, this reflection turns to Jesus’ words in John 15:13 to consider the meaning of sacrificial love. While we grieve the evil that took these lives, we honor faithful service and are reminded that true love is most often lived out through daily, costly obedience shaped by Christ.

Twelve years ago, this blog began on a day our community did not want – a day marked by shock, tears, and the unthinkable loss of a child. Today, we find ourselves mourning again. Different circumstances, the same shared sorrow. Two Ozark law enforcement officers have been killed by a criminal act, leaving families shattered and a community stunned into silence.
Moments like this reveal both what we hate and what we love. We hate that violence invades ordinary days. We hate that families receive knocks on doors no one should ever hear. And yet, once again, we love our community. We see compassion in quiet conversations, courage in those who continue to serve, and prayer rising as a collective response to grief.
Tragedy has a way of shaping us. The question is not whether we will mourn – but how. As we remember, recommit, resolve, request, and rest, we choose to respond not with fear or hopelessness, but with faith rooted in Christ. We mourn together. And by God’s grace, we move forward together.

Officer Down ~ A Deadly Day in the Ozarks
Today, our hearts are heavy. Deputy Gabriel Ramirez, just 30 years old, lost his life in the line of duty during what began as a routine traffic stop. Headlines like this are not abstractions. They represent real families, real sacrifice, and real grief.
Law enforcement officers step into danger so the rest of us don’t have to. They work nights, weekends, holidays. They face risk, paperwork, pressure, and unpredictability — not for prestige or wealth, but to serve.
Scripture reminds us to give “respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.” In a culture where law enforcement is often criticized and sometimes openly disrespected, we must choose gratitude, prayer, and support.
Pray for the Ramirez family.
Pray for fellow officers carrying grief while still reporting for duty.
Pray for protection, wisdom, and courage for those who put on the badge today.
May we never grow silent in our gratitude.
