**See Update Below Regarding Dakota Miller of Greenup, KY 5-16-17**
Friends, so many of you have shared and prayed for the little boy Dakota whose story has been shared over and over and over recently. There are nine things you need to know about Dakota and his story.
1. This story in one fashion or another has been passed around on the internet, primarily through Facebook, since 2014.
2. It is unconfirmed that this story is accurate in any way. Many recent post identify his dad as Michael Bass; other than that, this is similar to posts in 2014.
3. One version of the prayer request appeared at an online prayer board managed by Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Longview, Texas. That version contained a few specific details, including Dakota’s last name,”Wells,” and that he was from the Big Sandy area of Texas. Another site relates the young boy’s name is Waylon, and he was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center on 3 December 2016.
4. You care. Thank you. The fact that this has been passed so many times between friends on social media simply represents that you care. The Apostle Paul teaches the idea of mutual care between believers. “But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together” (1 Corinthians 12:24-26, emphasis mine).
5. Because Christ-followers desire to serve each other, stories like this easily deceive. In addition, the Bible teaches that our first instinct should be to believe what people tell us, so it is a natural instinct to believe a prayer request shared with us (1 Corinthians 13:7). In reality, social media is a great asset to all of us to share and distribute prayer requests. If you are going to err, err on the side of sharing instead of skepticism. A false or hoax prayer request like this can make us all skeptical which is not helpful.
6. The other incredible implication of this is that you pray. How exciting is that! The Apostle Peter exhorts us to always be ready to pray, “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers” (1 Peter 4:7). To be watchful means that we are poised and ready always to pray for another person. To be serious means that we pray according to God’s will in the situation.
7. Prayer is the source for help to which we must turn. Paul encourages us to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The writer of Hebrews welcomes the Christian into the throne room of God to make our requests known to Him. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
8. When you do pray, pray for the circumstances at hand while recognizing God is in control. God has this. He loves, cares, pays attention, and demonstrates His mercy to us in the situation (Romans 8:31-39; 1 Corinthians 10:13; James 1:2-18). So, bring your concerns and situations to Him in prayer (Philippians 4:6-7).
9. Most importantly, pray for the response (especially the heart) of those involved. Throughout the New Testament, the emphasis is on the response to the situation more than the situation itself (cf., 2 Corinthians 1:3-11). When in prison, Paul asked people to pray for his courage and discernment, not release from prison (Colossians 4:2-4). In Paul’s own prayer, he sought God to provide comfort for people in the heart (inner man) and help them to do what was right in the midst of their circumstances (outer man). He prayed, “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17).
Thank you for praying for Dakota and all the Dakotas of the world.

Update on a Different Circumstance and a Different Story from Greenup, Kentucky from May 16, 2017. A middle school young man, Dakota Miller from McKell Middle School in Greenup, KY was in a horrific accident on May 10th. His family has asked for people to pray for him, for which I am happy to pass along. The first names are the same; however, the situations are very different. Please pray for this family and young man who is in the hospital in West Virginia. You can read more at his grandma’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/debbie.munn.75. This is a recent article from his local newspaper.
Pastor Kevin’s Blog | Walking together through life as friends in Christ sharing wisdom along the journey
I came across your blog after reading a request for prayer for Michael Bass’ young son Dakota.
I loved it. Thank you
Thank you for amending your blog and for the much needed prayer that this will generate!
My Dear Friend sent this who I know by the grace of Christ and his salvation she prayed silently for mr❤️
Google Michael Bass and see the name of Dakota (had something to do with rifles sales)…I saw the prayer request before and was wondering if it was a true request.
Thank you, brother Kevin. Just this morning was forwarded a request to “pray for Dakota”. It costs me nothing to pray and I, as we all are, are called to pray without ceasing. Out of concern for its validity, I chose not to pass it on until searching it out, and – I was led to your post. Thanks for not only your clarification, but your response to the prayer side of this. You expressed here so much of what we as believers need to hear. The world is a calloused place, and though we be not “of it” we are yet “in it” – and you have done well in your encouraging and insightful words.
Thank you, thank you!!! I do get very tired of people who seem to delight in catching every possible hint of a hoax. Somehow, I truly believe the Old I serve can distinguish the intent and interpret the prayer properly.
Thank you so much for your blog. The one thing I try to keep in mind is that these post may be inaccurate in some ways but so needed in others. I choose to still pray and then add the unknown needs of similar circumstances. Again thank you
Prayer helps and we need to pray for the Dakota’s of this world.
Just got a text Sunday to pray for Dakota Miller son of Michael Bass, etc. & send to all intercessors. I normally get info first but didn’t. Later I hear it’s fake but God quickened to pray: Lord. Be with Dakota & family. Encamp angels round about him and his family. Raise him up totally healed body, physically, soul, his mind & emotions & spirit, God he & his family have a close relationship with You, God encounters. Set them on fire with the Holy Spirit. Come against spirits of suicide and death trying to destroy our young children and youth.Protect the children & youth. Guard their hearts, minds emotions. Let the body of Christ rise up & stand in the gap, say no more satan enough is enough. Then when learned older text same as you, God there’s a reason why it’s come, don’t let it stop us from reaching out. God is positioning & raising up an army of intercessors & ppl to go forth unafraid . Wake up, take back what the enemy has stolen, through prayer and touching livesves. Whatever Dakota is needing or his family meet that need. If there’s anyone else going through a similar situation intervene protect. Etc. Then got call article front page app out encouraging suicide. Let us not be discouraged praying as we hear needs. Just know God’s n control someone is crying out, May not be that name or exact situation but continue praying & God Holy Spirit, will pray through you.God knows more & before we do. Bless you for your blog.

On this same token…it wasn’t a year and a half ago my own grandson was blessed with a heart transplant at the age of 7 months….he had been on the transplant almost a month and only had hours left to live with the aide of a machine before being placed on ecmo ( that’s a heart and lung machine that does all the work and keeps the body alive). I asked for prayer via family… friends…church’s prayer chains that eventually made it to the web also…and thru the power of Prayer from all the people involved sending prayers…and because of the wonderful family who gave him the renewed chance of life…..my little Grandson is now a little over 2 years old and doing good. May God always Bless everyone who cares and prays for others.
I’ve been encouraged by many people praying for my family and I during many difficult times! The death of my Dad in 2014, the death of my Mother-in-law in 2016, many different surgeries my family and I have had in the past few years, when friends saw pictures of my Mom on social media and would call, text, or post replies to tell her hello. (She is a retired schoolteacher of 30+years, in a small community. We have been able to encourage her by telling her/showing her the comments.) Our first grandchild, a girl, is due any day, and people encourage all of us us about her.
Thank you for your post today. I personally know a child with many health problems named Dakota and have a great niece named Dakota as well. I’m sure all Dakota’s benefited from our prayers.
To any and all reading this,
Death by suicide is one of the most tragic life events a family can endure. I say this because I’m a sibling survivor. My sister left us on Valentine’s Day 2014. She was just 35 years young and left three little souls in her wake. Im doing all I can to raise the two eldest, they are now 16 and 14, and sadly the law complicated things and hasn’t allowed me custody of her youngest, now aged 8. At any rate, having gotten this prayer request last night, I prayed on it. Makes no difference to me whether or not Dakota was a real person, for my Lisa was. And she used a gun, and left us far too soon. I pray for all struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts, that they be brought nearer to God and in turn their loved ones. And I pray for the families, that they too find grace, patience, and unabashed love for all they encounter.
