Do you believe Jesus will come back today or this week? Does the thought of His return even show up somewhere on your radar for possibilities this week? If the return of Christ happened this week, would you be the least bit ready? As starters, anticipate the possibility.
The Angels Made a Promise
After the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, He spent a few weeks engaging the disciples and others. As His time on earth came to a close, Jesus’ biographer Dr. Luke records the scene.
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11, bold for emphasis)
The two angels made a promise that, as of this moment of writing, Jesus has yet to fulfill. Since Jesus keeps promises, we should anticipate the possibility.
How Important Is It to Anticipate the Possibility
How important is it to anticipate the possibility of the return of Christ today or this week? Very.
Jesus taught that if we are going to be a faithful and wise follower of His, we should live in constant anticipation. In Luke 12:35-48 Jesus discusses both the issue of His return and the disciples’ anticipation. Jesus explains, “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching” (Luke 12:37). He continues, “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes” (Luke 12:43).
In this portion, Jesus teaches to anticipate the possibility in three ways:
- Watch eagerly
- Wait expectantly
- Serve faithfully
As you start a new day and week, let me encourage you to anticipate the possibility of the return of Christ. Jesus promised blessings to those who do.

Thanks for the word today! I think many “Christians” (including myself) settle into life as normal more focused on their wants/needs for the moment without even considering His return! Without even thinking about how we should live for Him let alone looking for His return! God bless!
