A missionary friend dies this past weekend of COVID. We stop to remember 9/11 twenty years later. A pile of unspoken prayer requests – burdens that cannot be shared in public. Possibly you have one of those today as well. Let me encourage you this morning, God can do the impossible.
Jesus and Paul Emphasized God Can Do the Impossible
Jesus first:
27 But [Jesus] said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God” (Luke 18:27).
In a powerful exchange with His followers, they asked who can be saved. Jesus, answering their question about salvation, explained that what is humanly impossible is possible with God. In other words, as mere people, we cannot change our spiritual state, transition from dead to alive in Christ, somehow force our way into heaven. Instead, God made a plan, an offer, and a way for us to be saved. God can change us from spiritually dead to spiritually alive. Life in Christ results from God’s gracious power. Paul describes it, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus…” (Eph 4:10).
When you face spiritual battles for yourself or others, have hope! God can do the impossible.
Consider what Paul wrote:
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Friends, God is the One to whom Paul describes. Exceedingly, Abundantly. The power of the Holy Spirit works in us. He can do in us and in those we love exceedingly, abundantly, above all we ask or think. God can do the impossible.
God Can Do the Impossible
Both of these verses above specifically discuss what God can do in us and through us as followers of His. He can save and sanctify us. If you are burdened about your own soul and walk or another person’s, then take heart that God can do the impossible.
Possibly, your concern today is physical in nature. You have a burden, a broken body, a hurting friend, or some other kind of unspoken request. You can take heart as well. The same God who can do all things spiritually in you and others also has the power to do things physically. This is the argument from the greater to the lesser. If He can take one dead in trespasses and sins to alive in Christ, then He can certainly do something in the physical world as well.
Our response: take your burden to Him and then trust Him. As your trust wanes, take your burden to Him again and again. He listens for you, desires to hear you, and answers prayers. If an unjust judge is willing to help a poor and despised widow, how much more will God desire to listen and care for us as those He loves? (Luke 18:1-8)
