Writing for a chaplain’s resource, Staff Sergeant Greg Sherry, who is a Religious Affairs Specialist, wrote this encouraging piece. SSG Greg Sherry relays a personal story about using his compass and map where it reminds him of a special compass verse. You’ll enjoy the reminder. Your Compass Verse
Recently I found myself in a new environment where I did not know the roads or distances to travel. In that moment, a compass and a map became very valuable. It is interesting to think through how my environment and the circumstances around it made these tools more valuable.
Using these items a great deal, I found that I took them for granted when I did not need them. They basically were off to the side as I daily lived life.
Reflecting with gratitude on my compass and map, I thought through the time that God’s Word and Proverbs 1:7 became my spiritual compass. The wisest sage to ever live wrote “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Prov 1:7).
As a young 19-year-old researching this verse, it became clear that I did not respect the Lord and my attitude towards others reflected it. This one verse became what I call my “compass verse.” In it, Solomon reminds me to look at life and check my attitude, response, and goals to see if it aligns with God’s Word or if I need to make a change (or three).
Life continues to move; as it does, we need to remember to have our Compass available to help us to make changes that honor Christ. As circumstances continue to shift, it is good to have that compass verse ready to be used and not lost to memory in the far reaches of our mind.
The compass verse helps show me the correct direction and keep God-honoring change taking place as I travel through tough prairies and circumstances. Helpful every step of the way, remember to bring your compass on life’s journey.
