The Divisional Round weekend in the NFL just ended. As it did, I made a simple observation. Stadiums were filled with fans sitting right beside each other in all kinds of weather and circumstances who paid great money to watch their favorite team compete. The two worst, in terms of conditions, this weekend were the snow and bitterly cold temperatures in Green Bay and the wintry cold in Kansas City. Yet, the adverse conditions and gameday prices didn’t stop fans from coming out to see their favorite teams. The 12th man – the fans. The noise. Wild atmosphere. Entire stadiums chanting as one. Clearly, their passion unites them.
Passion Unites
To watch any of these games, you see how passion unites the crowds, the teams, and complete strangers. Football people love their favorite teams. For some of us, this weekend made no difference at all; however, for many, that was not the case. As we watch those who came, participated, and enjoyed the respective games, we can’t help but see how passion over the game, the teams, and the run to the championship unites people.
A key play. Walk-off field goals in three games. A major comeback. A perfect pass. In these incidences, people unite everywhere in celebration, agony, or mere appreciation for the sport.
Even for those who do not like football or sports, the simplicity of this principle is obvious. This weekend football. Other weekends other things. For each person in life, something.
As We Move into a New Week
As we move into a new week, I can’t help but wonder so many things as a pastor, counselor, and Christian brother.
- When is the last time I brought that kind of passion into a moment of reading my Bible to learn about Christ?
- How often do I affiliate with Jesus Christ so willingly like all the sports fans on social media and in stadiums this weekend?
- How often do I affiliate with other followers of Jesus Christ so willingly?
- Am I willing to sing, cheer, and get excited about Jesus the way so many are about a sports franchise, particular player, or particular play?
- Did I show up for everyone this weekend in my faith to cheer them on, congratulate them, or be part of the excitement?
These questions could go on and on. But, I just have one minute.
Final questions: as I go into my week, what or who am I most affiliating with? What is my passion? What will I be discussing the most?
On top of all the good football, I have a few things at least to ponder.
Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31).
