Pay Close Attention

Has anyone ever asked you to pay close attention to what he or she is saying? I remember many times when someone has said to me or to a group of people, “Now I want you to pay close attention to this.” Possibly it was a step in a series of steps on a project, a specific point in a lesson being taught, or a tricky part of directions.

Years ago, I remember the first time someone explained to me how to get through downtown Saint Louis where Interstate 44 transitions to go across the Mississippi River. Downtown was a mess then. My friend told me to pay attention to his details and then to really pay attention to the exit and traffic when I was driving through there. Every time I drive through Saint Louis on my way east, when I get to that area I remember the words of my friend. “Pay special attention…”

Great Advice from Hebrews

The author of Hebrews gives us great and similar advice as well.

Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away (Hebrews 2:1).

This author tells us to pay special or closer attention to the things we have heard.

Pay special attention.

If we have learned it from the Bible, pay special attention to what it is saying. Why?

We are warned – lest you drift away.

The reason we are to pay closer attention to what we hear is the tendency to drift. The author of Hebrews warns us to keep us from drifting away.

If you look at the picture above, you will see a pile of driftwood from Moraine Lake Mountain Forest in Alberta, Canada.

Driftwood receives its name from the fact that it floats wherever the wind or current takes it. If the wind is blowing one direction or another, an entire pile of wood can drift in that direction. Sometimes it is one piece at a time; at other times, it is an entire pile.

Nothing keeps driftwood anchored. It constantly drifts, being tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind or current.

Friends, we can do the same spiritually. The author of Hebrews warns us. He desires for us to be anchored to our wonderful Savior as we pay close attention to what we learn. When the winds of life and culture blow against us, Jesus is the anchor of our soul. He keeps us from drift. Therefore, we must pay close attention.

As you tackle this week, pay close attention to what you have learned so that you will not get caught in drift. Instead, be anchored to Christ.
