Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do
Happy Labor Day
On this day we celebrate Labor Day, a special day we recognize the end of summer, a day off work, the American worker, and work.
Officially, Labor Day recognizes the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.1
The Bible celebrates good and hard work as well – not with a day off though. Check out these two passages:
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:17)
Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do…
Notice there are two simple ideas here.
First, whatever you do, do it with all your might. Put in your best effort. Try not to settle for second-best. Whatever the job is, go for it and seek to do it well.
Second, do it as unto the Lord. The goal is to do your job for the glory of God. This is so critical for all of us. We do not just simply work; we work as unto the Lord. To do something in the name of Jesus Christ means that we do our best striving to be Christlike in our doings. In the process, we demonstrate gratitude as well.
On this Labor Day, I hope you celebrate work. And this day and every day, whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might as unto the Lord for His glory.
Happy Labor Day!
