What Is Your Relationship Goal?

As a new week kicks off, each one of us will interact with others throughout the week. Some of us will go to work; others enjoy retirement relationships. Children, teenagers, and young adults will go to school; others will help them get ready by making lunch, getting them to the bus stop, or dropping them off. Some will work from home; others will simply work hard at home. As you know, this list could go on indefinitely. The reality is this: In each one of our lives, we will interact with people this week. In those interactions, what is your relationship goal?

One Option

The Bible provides us many options for relationships goals. Let me suggest one reminder to get this week started. As followers of Jesus Christ who desire to walk worthy of the Gospel, we want to intentionally maintain the five attitudes necessary for gospel living. These attitudes are described by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4.

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3)

The five attitudes necessary to maintain walking worthy of the Gospel are: 1) All Humility (lowliness), 2) All Self-Control (gentleness), 3) Patience (longsuffering), 4) Forbearance in love (putting up with each other in love), and 5) Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

The Benefits

If you choose to live with these five attitudes this week, you will receive a variety of benefits. First, you will indeed walk worthy of the gospel in your relationships. Second, those around you will benefit from interacting with you. Third, you will enjoy a peace that is not normal to our reactions in the flesh. Fourth, you will benefit personally from knowing that you interacted with others in a way that honors God.
